About Us

What sets us apart?

Our Parish Community

The lifeblood of every parish is their parish community. Our parishioners come from all walks of life and nationalities, who serve God by living their faith actively. We strive to continue the welcoming atmosphere first established here in 1989.
Our Ministries and Groups

Parish ministry enables our parishioners to actively live their faith through service to others, an active prayer life, as well as social activities to come together as a community. Our parishioners are encouraged to be active, not only in the parish, but also in our community.
Our Property

Our parish is blessed with a truly beautiful space for worship and ministry. Our courtyards help to provide a calm space for both prayer and community. The award-winning artwork throughout our spaces help bring the saints to life, and center us in the presence of Christ.

Parish History

In 1989, a small group of parishioners gathered together to worship at the Palm Mortuary Chapel on South Jones and at the Trinity Methodist Church on West Charleston, establishing the St. Joseph, Husband of Mary, Roman Catholic Church. The Pastor, Fr. Joe Anthony, had little more than a card table purchased from K-Mart (used as a temporary altar and the first “parish desk”) and about 50 registered families with a strong desire to pray and worship together as a new parish family. What started out as a dream had now become a reality.

As membership in the parish grew, a modular building (affectionately labeled “rubber hut”) was assembled on property purchased by the diocese at the corner of W. Sahara and Tenaya. This building was small, had a limited temperature control ability and often had a leaking roof during rainy weather. These were humble beginnings, but parishioners were elated to have “a place of their own.” In 1991, a sufficient number of parishioners had enrolled to undertake the first Parish Building Program. The parish was divided into ten districts, containing about 500 registered families. Through the generosity of these parishioners, funds were raised for construction of the multi-purpose building that included a temporary church hall, and kitchen facility. Five hundred seats were set up and the Church quickly filled at all the Christmas Masses.

Thus began the phenomenal growth that was to surpass all expectations. In 1994, with over 3,000 registered families attending the church, it became evident that the time had come to build a permanent church. Due to excellent foresight on the part of Fr. Joe, his executive committee and the Diocese, plans were made during the first phase of construction to build a permanent sanctuary on the corner property. The second Building Fund Program was kicked off with a Captain's Meeting on March 4, 1995.

Over $1,550,000 in pledges was secured. Bishop Daniel F. Walsh presided at the official ground breaking ceremonies on Good Friday, April 16, 1995 with the parishioners place in their “hand made” crosses on the site of the future church in a spirit of the prayerful dedication. Subsequently the construction bidding process began and Bishop Daniel F. Walsh awarded the bid to Precision Construction. Building construction began in August 1995. Fortunately, weather conditions were favorable for construction and no delays were experienced.

On August 14, 1996, the parish of St. Joseph, Husband of Mary, dedicated their magnificent new church and experienced a “new beginning.” Further parish growth and opportunities for evangelization seemed endless. The ability to seat 1,400 people at one time and the projected influx of residents relocating to our city pointed to significant parish growth and an incredible opportunity to spread the Good News of the Lord!

In 1997, the national publication of Modern Liturgy awarded three First Place Awards to Bruno Salvatori for each of the three mosaics that he created for the altar of St. Joseph 's. These mosaics, The Pantocrator, Our Lady of Vladmir and Rublev's Holy Trinity, were each named separately for the highest honor. This was the first time in the history of the publication that one artist received three awards. Also recognized by Modern Liturgy were the bas-relief sculptures of Maximilian Kolbe and Edith Stein. Modern Liturgy published an article on our wonderful mosaics and church artwork in their September, 1997 issue. We have received many visitors to our church from around the country and around the world who have been inspired by this art.

On August 14, 1997, the parish of St. Joseph, Husband of Mary, celebrated its first anniversary of its dedication. A reception was held following a Mass celebrating the Feast of the Assumption of Our Blessed Mother. The parish staff was on hand to provide “church tours” for interested visitors. It was a celebration of thanksgiving, love and achievement.

We feel that this parish has been truly blessed by God with fine leaders, an outstanding parish staff, and wonderful volunteers. Without doubt, it's the good people of St. Joseph , Husband of Mary, that have helped make this parish such an outstanding faith community and a place of worship. We welcome all visitors and new parishioners to our parish family. “Come & See” and share your faith with us at St. Joseph, Husband of Mary Roman Catholic Church.
