Holy Face Icon
The image of the Holy Face has been revered since the time of the crucifixion. Although the event is not mentioned in the gospel accounts, oral traditions holds that a woman named Seraphia met Jesus on His was to Calvary along the Via Dolorosa. She was so overcome with grief and compassion for the suffering Jesus she removed her veil and wiped His face. It is said that Jesus, in testimony to her love for Him, left the image of His face on the veil. The veil, known as the vera icon “true image” in Latin, over time became mixed with the name of Seraphia, transforming her name to “Veronica.”
